2010 Oregon Strengths:
When the Ducks are right on offense, they’re as unstoppable and exciting as any team in the country. The read-option offense still gives Pac-10 defenses fits. The defense, which should be better than last year’s unit, is probably underrated.
2010 Oregon Weaknesses:
How much of the offensive’s explosive capabilities are attributable to Masoli? Things Just might not be the same without his power running, decision-making and savvy. On defense, the Ducks are thin at defensive tackle and can’t afford injuries there.
2010 Oregon Offense:
One of Oregon’s positions of strength has turned into a summer-long mystery. The quarterback battle between senior Nate Costa and sophomore Darren Thomas won’t be decided until August, tempering expectations for an otherwise-stacked Ducks team. It wasn’t supposed to be this way, but starting quarterback Jeremiah Masoli, a master of the readoption offense, is suspended for the season after his involvement in a theft at an Oregon fraternity. Costa, with a history of knee problems, isn’t the athletic, running threat that Thomas is. Thomas, who redshirted last season, doesn’t have as much background in the offense as Costa does. But Thomas does have a strong 2008 relief performance against Boise State to his credit. Either way, the Ducks have ample supporting skill, starting with sophomore LaMichael James. He had 1,546 rushing yards last season and posted six games in which he ran for more than 150 yards. Sophomore running back Kenjon Barner is another super-fast option. The Ducks’ other loss on offense can’t be minimized. Tight end Ed Dickson helped create open spaces by being a threat running up the seam. Oregon has intriguing options at tight end, including 2009 backup David Paulson, junior college transfer Brandon Williams and touted hometown signee Curtis White. Jeff Maehl is a clutch receiver who had 53 receptions for 696 yards and six touchdowns last season. The line returns intact, which will help mitigate the uncertainty at quarterback.
2010 Oregon Defense:
The defense’s hallmark is speed, probably the fastest in the PAC-10. The Ducks have eight starters back but tinkered in the spring to squeeze even more production out of the unit. The big move was outside linebacker Eddie Pleasant to the rover position. He has the size and the skills to do it. The Ducks can plug in promising junior Josh Kaddu, or other good possibilities, at Pleasant’s old spot. Defensive end Kenny Rowe is back after leading the PAC-10 with 11.5 sacks. Junior Terrell Turner is in line to replace Will Tukuafu at the other end, but converted tight end Dion Jordan showed in the spring that he might have immediate value as a pass rusher. With Pleasant’s move, the secondary is deep and athletic, and nobody can be certain of a starting role once fall camp begins.
2010 Oregon Special Teams:
The new placekicker could be Rob Beard, who handled kickoffs last season. The other option is incoming freshman Alejandro Maldonado, so this will be a camp kick-off. Jackson Rice returns after averaging 40.5 yards per punt last season. Kenjon Barner is a burner in the return game, scoring last season on a 10o-yard kickoff return.

2010 Oregon Predictions:
A tough offseason seems to have knocked the Ducks down a peg. The defending PAC-10 champs would have been a slam dunk choice to repeat, if not for the suspension of Masoh. As it is, it might be wise not to discount the fast and experienced Ducks, although an Oct. 30 game at USC could tell the tale.
