2009 Record: 10-3 Big 12 Record: 6-2 2010 Returning Starters: 9: 4 Offense, 3 Defense, Kicker, Punter
Coach: Mike Gundy (Oklahoma State and overall: 36-27, 5 years)
Offensive Coordinators: Dana Holgorsen Defensive Coordinators: Bill Young
2010 Oklahoma State Players to Watch: RB Kendall Hunter, WR Hubert Anyiam, QB Brandon Weeden, LB Orle Lemon, DE Ugo Chinasa
2010 Oklahoma State Strengths:
If the Cowboys adapt to new coordinator Dana Holgorsen’s offense, they should be able to score. Holgorsen’s units at Houston and Texas Tech were among the more prolific In the NCAA. Hunter, a 1,500-yard runner in 2008, is healthy and should be akey contributor.
2010 Oklahoma State Weaknesses:
A new quarterback, an almost entirely new line, and a new offensive scheme could really swell the learning curve. On defense, only two starters from the Cotton Bowl are back. It’s atough closing stretch with two of the final three games against Texas and Oklahoma.
2010 Oklahoma State Offense:
With its top four offensive players and other key contributors from 2009 now earning NFL paychecks, Oklahoma State is in rebuilding mode. So maybe that makes 2010 a perfect time for a new coordinator. The new guy, Dana Holgorsen, is making major changes, and not just in the depth chart. Holgorsen arrived from Houston, where he coordinated one of the nation’s most prolific offenses (the Cougars led the nation in total offense, passing and scoring last season). Before that, he worked for Mike Leach at Texas Tech. For a team that has thrived on a powerful running game and a balanced run-pass mixture, moving the football this fall will be an entirely different effort. Brandon Weeden, a 26-year-old former minorleague baseball pitcher, will replace quarterback Zac Robinson. Jitterbug running back Kendall Hunter is back and healthy. Also, with Dez Bryant’s NCAA suspension enduring most of last season, the entire corps of wide receivers gained experience.
2010 Oklahoma State Defense:
The Cowboys ranked 93rd nationally in total defense in 2008. Then, OSU alum Bill Young arrived and began a major overhaul. The Cowboys nnished 31st in total defense last season. That included a jump from 51st against the run in 2008 to 11th in 2009. Things remain under construction. Last year’s Cowboys had nine senior starters. This year, Young is starting over. Safeties Markelle Martin and Victor Johnson and middle linebacker Orie Lemon – the 2008 tackles leader who missed all last season with a knee injury – should anchor the defense. Ugo Chinasa and Jamie Blatnick are back at end. But it’s defensive tackle, outside linebacker and cornerback where uncertainty lies. The Cowboys went through all of spring with just four scholarship corners.
2010 Oklahoma State Special Teams:
Under coordinator Joe DeForest, the Cowboys always seem to have an advantage. This year, that advantage is punter/kickoff specialist Quinn Sharp. He won the award last year as the nation’s best kickoff man, and he could be in line for the Ray Guy Award this year as college football’s best punter. Dan Bailey (13 of 18 on neld goal attempts last year) has improved his range. Return aces Perrish Cox and Dez Bryant are in the NFL now, which leaves both kickoff and punt returns up in the air going into fall. Expect newcomers to help.

2010 Oklahoma State Predictions:
The strong-armed Weeden – who looked good in the spring game – needs to adapt quickly to Holgorsen’s scheme, and the Cowboys, with no tight ends and lacking a complementary running game, need to be creative in nnding ways to get Hunter the ball. In reality, the defense overall could be more challenging than the new offense.
