2009 Record: 5-7 SEC Record: 3-5 2010 Returning Starters: 14: 6 Offense, 6 Defense, Kicker, Punter

Coach: Dan Mullen (Mississippi State and overall: 15-7,1 year)

Offensive Coordinators: Les Koenning Defensive Coordinators: Manny Diaz and Chris Wilson

2010 Mississippi State Players to Watch: QB Chris Relf, WR Chad Bumphis, WR/KR Leon Berry, LT Derek Sherrod, DE Pernell McPhee, DT Fletcher Cox, LB K.J. Wright, SS Charles Mitchell, CB Johnthan Banks

2010 Mississippi State Strengths:
Many of the stars on Mississippi State’s defense return, including the two freshmen who emerged as adequate cornerbacks last year. State’s defensive line will be one of the best In the SEC. Bumphis is a dynamic playmaker at wide receiver.

2010 Mississippi State Weaknesses:
State has little depth behind Bumphis at receiver. Quarterback is an unproven commodity, especially when It comes to passing. State is looking to fill the void left by Anthony Dixon at running back, and the offensive line still has much to prove.

2010 Mississippi State Offense:

Mississippi State ended 2009 with a momentumbuilding win over its archrival and saw its future at quarterback. Chris Relf, a lanky, athletic quarterback, ran roughshod over Ole Miss, sparking much hype. He closed spring ahead of contender Tyler Russell, though coach Dan Mullen won’t mind playing both. Who will get the handoffs? A group that includes junior Robert Elliott, junior college transfer Vick Ballard and redshirt freshmen LaDarius Perkins and Montrell Conner will vie for supremacy and carries within a committee approach. Mullen has about four dependable wide receivers for his spread offense, which is about four fewer than he wants. The top part of the rotation is good, though. Sophomore Chad Bumphis was the team’s leading receiver last year, making the All-SEC Freshman team. The lack of receiver depth opens the door for State’s deep crop of tight ends, including Marcus Green. On the line, State returns four starters from a crew that made drastic improvements in 2009. Sophomore Tobias Smith, healthy now, was projected to start as a freshman before suffering an ankle injury in August that kept him out for much of the year.

2010 Mississippi State Defense:

When coordinator Carl Torbush left for Kansas in the offseason, Mullen hired Manny Diaz from Middle Tennessee State. His pedigree suggests an attacking style; his spring practice sessions showed that’s exactly what he and co-coordinator Chris Wilson, who came from Oklahoma, are trying to implement. Good for them that State returns some pretty good talent. Defensive end Pernell McPhee, who thrived with 12 tackles for loss last year, returns as the team leader and anchors a defensive front that could be the strength of the team. Josh Boyd and Fletcher Cox were praised as true freshmen tackles last year; both seem secure in starting roles. Chris White, who quietly was an anchor at outside linebacker last year, moves to the middle linebacker spot once occupied by team leader Jamar Chaney. K.J. Wright maintains his usual outside spot. State moved Cameron Lawrence from safety to the other outside spot, and initial reviews were positive. Perhaps no secondary underwent as quick a renaissance as State’s. It was often criticized after giving up plenty of passing yards early last season. Some personnel switches produced some fme players: Corey Broomneld and Johnthan Banks became All-SEC Freshman team members. Strong safety Charles Mitchell is the leader.

2010 Mississippi State Special Teams:

The Bulldogs return all three of the kickers it used regularly last year: punter Heath Hutchins and placekickers Sean Brauchle and Derek DePasquale. Leon Berry returns as the primary punt and kick returner with help from Chad Bumphis.

2010 Mississippi State Predictions:

The Bulldogs have all the pieces in place to make an improvement from last year’s 5-7 record, but they have inexperience in all the wrong places: quarterback and wide receiver. Shore up those spots, and State can benefit from an easier schedule than last year’s and get into the postseason picture.
