There are many holes to fill on defense. which will be young and Inexperienced. Two former receivers, Mitchell Evans and Matt Emest. are being counted on to start In the secondary. Three junior college transfers need to play key roles immediately.

2010 Indiana Offense:

Eight starters return from an offense that .was decent last season. Indiana has a standout quarterback, arguably the best receiving corps in the league and a potential star in the making in running back Darius Willis. Senior quarterback Ben Chappell could be in the mix for some sort of All-Big Ten consideration. He fInished third in the league with 2,941 passing yards, completing 62.6 percent of his passes. Chappell has three wide receivers returning who each caught more than 40 passes a year ago – Tandon Doss (77 catches for 962 yards), Damarlo Belcher (61-770) and Terrance Turner (46-443). Willis, despite missing three games with injuries, still managed to fInish fIfth among Big Ten rushers with 607 yards. Three returning offensive line starters – tackle James Brewer, guard Justin Pagan and center Will Matte – will lead the way up front. IU is sticking with the Pistol offense, which was installed last season. The Hoosiers also will continue to use some Wildcat packages. Either Dusty Kiel or Edward Wright-Baker, both multi-dimensional redshirt freshman quarterbacks, will replace Chappell when Indiana runs the Wildcat.

2010 Indiana Defense:

There are many holes to fIll on defense, which lost eight starters. Safety Mitchell Evans and cornerback Matt Ernest – both former receivers are being counted on to start in the secondary. Plus, three highly regarded junior college transfers – cornerbacks Lenyatta Kiles and Andre Kates, and linebacker Jeff Thomas – need to contribute immediately. Thomas and Kiles participated in spring practice, and Thomas will enter fall camp as the starting middle linebacker. The staff is excited about the potential of two defensive ends – junior Darius Johnson and Kevin Bush, a 25-year-old redshirt sophomore. Bush began his career at Toledo but left after his freshman year and spent three-and-half years in the U.S. Army, serving in Iraq. The former prep star from Fort Wayne, Ind., sat out last season after transferring to IU. The Hoosiers are four deep at tackle, led by returning starters Larry Black Jr. and Adam Replogle, who started 11 games a year ago as a true freshman. Replogle’s brother, Tyler, a senior, is a secondyear starter at linebacker and is the Hoosiers’ leading returning tackler. With hopes of taking advantage of their young talent and quickness, the Hoosiers will line up in 4-3 and 3-4 formations this season.

2010 Indiana Special Teams:

Placekicker Nick Freeland and punter Chris Hagerup return. Freeland has a strong leg but was inconsistent as a redshirt freshman in 2009, making 14 of 25 fIeld goal attempts. Hagerup, also inconsistent after coming off knee surgery during last offseason, still managed to average 40.5 yards per punt.

2010 Indiana Predictions:

The Hoosiers might have to simply outscore people. The offense fIgures to be productive, but the defense – consistently among the worst in the Big Ten for the past decade – will be relying on a handful of young and/or inexperienced players to come up big.
