2009 Record: 3-9 ACC Record: 2-6 2010 Returning Starters: 13: 4 Offense, 7 Defense, Kicker, Punter

Coach: Mike London (Virginia and overall: 0-0, 1st year)

Offensive Coordinators: Bill Lazor Defensive Coordinators: Jim Reid

2010 Virginia Players to Watch: QB Marc Verica, WR Tim Smith. TB Dominique Wallace, TE Joe Torchia. CB Ras-I Dowling, DE Matt Conrath, DE Cam Johnson, 55 Rodney McLeod

2010 Virginia Strengths:
The secondary returns three veteran starters, featuring senior Ras-I Dowling, who had three Interceptions last year (eight career). The defensive line boasts tons of experience that plans on putting pressure on opposing QBs. The Cavs are deep at running back with avariety of sizes.

2010 Virginia Weaknesses:
There Is not an abundance of proven linebackers on the two-deep. other than Verfca, there’s not another Quarterback in the program who has taken asnap In agame. There’s not alot of depth on an offensive line that Is viewed as somewhat shaky.

2010 Virginia Offense:

New head coach Mike London is banking on coordinator Bill Lazor, plucked from an affiliation with some of the NFL’s greatest minds, to breathe life into one of the nation’s most stagnant offenses over the past four years. Lazor, who worked under Dan Reeves, Joe Gibbs and Mike Holmgren, has his work cut out. The Cavaliers fInished 118th in the nation in total offense last season. While London’s plan is to feature a more conservative offense, based on a physical running game in the same mold that helped him win a FCS championship at Richmond, some playmakers must emerge. Much of the focus will be on quarterback Marc Verica, who will compete as a graduate student and try to regain the confidence he displayed during a six-game stretch as an unplanned starter in 2008. During that span, Verica became only the second quarterback in UVa history to throw for at least 200 yards in six consecutive games. Matt Schaub was the other. Verica backed up veteran Jameel Sewell last season and saw mostly clean-up duty. Redshirt sophomore Torrey Mack is the leading returning rusher with only 73 yards on 23 carries. Dominique Wallace, who suffered a broken leg after three games last season, may be the man to beat if he returns healthy. Several wide receivers return, but the only semiproven deep threat is sophomore Tim Smith.

2010 Virginia Defense:

London, who had two coaching stints at Virginia under his predecessor, Al Groh, scrapped Groh’s 3-4 alignment to go with the more traditional 4-3. The immediate result was improving the overall speed of the defense by moving some safeties to outside linebacker spots and some outside linebackers to defensive end. This promises to be a more aggressive defense under coordinator Jim Reid, who came from the Miami Dolphins, where he effectively used the blitz with his outside linebackers. While the Cays have an experienced front four and secondary, there’s little experience or depth at linebacker. Steve Greer, the team’s leading tackler last season as a freshman, is the anchor at middle linebacker. Defensive end Cam Johnson needs to be the primary pass rusher in a front four that could be tough to run on. The secondary is solid with three starters returning, led by All-American-caliber cornerback Ras-I Dowling.

2010 Virginia Special Teams:

Returning placekicker Robert Randolph converted 17 of 19 field-goal attempts last season and was reliable from inside 40 yards. Junior Jimmy Howell should hold onto his punting duties, having averaged 40.1 yards per kick last season.

2010 Virginia Predictions:

The Cavaliers are in a rebuilding mode, coming off their third losing season in the last four years. A young team, UVa hopes to scratch out whatever it can this season but isn’t considered a threat to do much damage in the ACC’s Coastal division. There are two FCS opponents on the schedule, along with Eastern Michigan. Outside of those games, the Wahoos could be in for some rough sledding.
