2009 Record: 5-7 ACC Record: 2-6 2010 Returning Starters: 12: 7 Offense, 4 Defense, Kicker
Coach: Tom O’Brien (North Carolina State and overall: 16-21, 3 years)
Offensive Coordinators: Dana Bible Defensive Coordinators: Mike Archer
2010 North Carolina State Players to Watch: QB Russell Wilson, WR Jarvis Williams, WR Owen Spencer, TE George Bryan, PR/KR TJ. Graham, LB Nate Irving, LB Audle Cole, SBrandan Bishop
2010 North Carolina State Strengths:
Wilson will have plenty of capable targets, led by Williams, who had 11 touchdown catches in 2009. There is strong competition at linebacker. It should be an emotionallift early in the season when popular offensive coordinator Dana Bible returns to the sidelines less than ayear after being diagnosed with leukemia.
2010 North Carolina State Weaknesses:
The running attack lacks aclear-cut starter heading into camp. Ayoung but sizable offensive line lacks game experience. The possible suspension of several key players doesn’t help the Wolfpacks’ depth – not to mention team unity.
2010 North Carolina State Offense:
Despite focusing on baseball this spring, Russell Wilson will start under center this fall for the Wolfpack. Wilson led the conference in touchdown passes in 2009 with 31, fourth-best in the nation. His 3,287 total yards of offense was the third-highest singleseason total in school history. Sophomore Mike Glennon performed well in Wilson’s spring absence. Injuries to running backs Curtis Underwood and Brandon Barnes this spring opened the door for James Washington and walk-on freshman Travis Leggett to vie for plenty of carries and a potential starting role. Barnes’s status for the fall wasn’t immediately clear after he needed surgery for a dislocated ankle. Wideouts Jarvis Williams and Owen Spencer will be big-play guys again after combining to haul in 17 touchdown passes and 1,312 yards from Wilson last season Darrell Davis provides Wilson with an extra weapon George Bryan’s future is in doubt after the firstteam ACC player was arrested in April. Bryan led the conference in catches by a tight end and was the Wolfpack’s second-leading receiver. Jake Vermiglio, also arrested with Bryan, is the lone lineman with starting experience in spring camp. The balance of the offensive front consists of sophomores Andrew Wallace, Camden Wentz, RJ. Mattes and junior Mikel Overgaard. Sam Jones impressed this spring and may challenge at right tackle.
2010 North Carolina State Defense:
Nate Irving will pull on a Wolfpack uniform after missing 2009 with injuries from a car accident. Irving, who averaged close to nine tackles a game in 2008, was able to participate in spring ball from the middle linebacker position. Other linebackers such as Audie Cole, Dwayne Maddox and Terrell Manning got valuable playing time in Irving’s absence. Cole led the team in tackles in 2009 with 73. The Wolfpack lost all four of their starters along the defensive line from last season – including Willie Young, who was drafted by the Detroit Lions. Stepping into Young’s vacant slot is Audi Augustin, a senior who has appeared in 36 career games. Northeastern transfer David Akinniyi joins the Wolfpack defensive front. Freshman A.J. Ferguson’s strong spring should allow him to compete for playing time in the fall. A slew of sophomore defensive backs, including C.J. Wilson and Rashard Smith at the corners will anchor the secondary. Brandan Bishop and Earl Wolff will be in the safety spots.
2010 North Carolina State Special Teams:
Josh Czajkowski needs to make his first four attempts to eclipse the school record of 76 consecutive PATs. He is third among active ACC kickers for career field goals with 26. Redshirt freshman Chris Ward handled all the punting duties this spring. T.J. Graham proved in spring he’s fully recovered from a leg injury. His 1,602 career kick return yards rank him second in the ACC among active players.

2010 North Carolina State Predictions:
Off-the-field issues and injuries continue to plague the Wolfpack. Still, it appears Tom O’Brien’s squad can be a darkhorse to win the ACC Atlantic Division and earn the fourth-year coach his first winning season at NC State.
