Dallas won the NFC East last year with a 11-5 record. They were 6-2 at home and 5-3 on the road. They went 4-2 in the division and 9-3 in the conference.
They lost to the Minnesota Vikings 34-3 in the Divisional Round of the playoffs.
Dallas Cowboys Outlook for 2010
Dallas had a breakthrough year in 2009 by putting the demons of past season collapses behind them with a winning December, a NFC East Title, and a victory over Philadelphia in the playoffs. Given the high profile nature of this team, the bar has been raised even higher for 2010. Nothing short of a Super Bowl appearance is expected and will be accepted by the team’s owner Jerry Jones and the players themselves.
The pieces are in place on both sides of the ball for a long run. The Cowboys finished last season ranked second in the league in total offense and was equally balanced between the pass and the run. QB Tony Romo had his best year ever and WR Miles Austin emerged as a legitimate No.1 receiver and scoring threat. With the addition of WR Dez Bryant, their number one pick in this year’s draft, Dallas should have one of the most explosive offenses in the league.
Defensively, the Cowboys had the ninth ranked defense overall and were ranked fourth against the run and second in points allowed. With only six picks in the draft they used four of them to add some depth to an already solid unit. They have resigned the majority of their free agents, most recently S Gerald Sensabaugh so this unit remains relatively unchanged from the one that played so well down the stretch last season.
Dallas is emerging as the class of this division but they will need a consistent effort from Romo in order to take the next step. This will be a make or break year to see if he joins the elite list of QB’s in the league or falls back into the pack.
