Purdue Boilermakers vs Duke Blue Devils Preview, Odds & Prediction
The Blue Devils defense may just be the answer to their offensive deficiencies. Duke isn’t a flashy team but got it done, making quick work for their first two tourney opponents. They are led by senior guard Jon Scheyer who should be primed for a comeback to lead the Devils offense against Purdue after a meltdown, completing only 5 of 18 shots in the first two rounds. Nolan Smith will be expected to help out until Scheyer heats up, and is a player that can help shoulder some of the offensive load. Duke will need to contain Purdue’s E’Twaun Moore and JaJuan Johnson while utilizing their post players, especially center Brian Zoubek, to take away any sustained inside opportunities. Duke’s bench hasn’t been producing a lot of points, so the Devils starters will need stay away from foul trouble.
Purdue, which has endured some struggles on offense since losing standout guard Robbie Hummel to a season-ending ACL injury back on Feb. 24, are yet to regain their offensive explosiveness. This could play into Duke’s hands, especially if the Blue Devils can find their rhythm offensively. Senior Keaton Grant has been handed the dubious task of replacing Hummel, but has had a miserable time measuring up thus far. Purdue’s No. 1 and No. 3 scorers, E’Twaun Moore and JaJuan Johnson, have struggled to find openings within the Boilermaker offense since Hummel’s unexpected departure. The Boilermakers need Grant and Chris Kramer to provide some offense, taking attention away from Moore and Johnson allowing them to find openings, which won’t be easy.
The odds makers have the Blue Devils as -8-point favorites.
Purdue will dig deep to keep this one close, but the Devils defense will be too much as they win by a close four point margin.
