Tennessee Volunteers vs Ohio State Buckeyes Preview, Odds & Prediction
Despite the heroics of Evan Turner, Ohio State may be the thinnest team in a field of 16. The Buckeyes lack of depth has Turner, Jon Diebler, and David Lighty seeing over 30 minutes of playing time each and every game. The big question is, will Ohio State’s lack of depth catch up with them the deeper into the tournament they go? The Buckeyes success has been using a zone trap since Thad Matta took over, utilizing Turner’s quickness while Lighty rattles opposing guards, creating turnovers. The Bucks are at their best when Diebler is connecting on 3-pointers, that opens driving lanes for Turner. However, the Buckeyes are vulnerable in the post as Dallas Lauderdale is a threat as a shot blocker, but doesn’t offer up much offensively.
The Bucks might be in luck though, as they now face a Tennessee team that may be just as thin. The Vols are heading into the Sweet 16 for the fourth time in five years, a place where they were knocked out by Ohio State, which reached the national title game in 2007. Tennessee has done a great job remaking themselves with the midseason dismissal of Tyler Smith, and has emerged as a well-disciplined team both offensively and defensively. The team is lead by guards Scotty Hopson, Bobby Maze and J.P. Prince as well as forward Wayne Chism, who will appear in his third Sweet 16.
The odds makers have the Buckeyes as -4 ½ -point favorites.
With Evan Turner and the current form of Ohio State, this one is in the books as the Buckeyes win by five on their way to a Final Four appearance.
