2009-2010 Missouri State Season Preview
The Cuonzo Martin era hardly got off to a rousing start last season.
The Bears endured their worst season as an NCAA Division 1 school, posting an 11-20 record and winning just three of 18 Valley games to finish last. Missouri State ranked 302nd nationally in field-goal percentage and its 60.9 scoring average was the school’s lowest since the 1949-50 season. Injuries left Missouri State with eight healthy players at the end of the season.
A quick turnaround seems unlikely, as the Bears lost three of their top four scorers. The bleak outlook does contain some slivers of hope, in part because of the players Martin has returning and in part because of the players he’s bringing in.
Of the returners, forward Kyle Weems and guard Cardell McFarland showed the most promise as freshmen. Weems scored 316 points – fourth-most by a freshman in school history – and showed the ability to hurt teams from the perimeter as well as on the drive. McFarland is the kind of tough defender Martin’s defense first philosophy needs.
Of the newcomers, guards Adam Leonard and NaBs Ricks are potential difference-makers. Leonard is a transfer from Eastern Kentucky, where he averaged 12.5 and 11.9 points and showed outstanding perimeter-shooting skills. Ricks averaged 17.2 points last season at Johnson County (Kan.) Community College. As a high school senior, he led the state of Pennsylvania in scoring with a 35.6-point average.
Another JC transfer, Jermaine Mallett, will figure into the mix for playing time, as will center Caleb Patterson, a 7-0 transfer from Colorado. Freshmen Keith Pickens, Jerome Jones and Michael Porter also should get a look.
Competition for playing time should be intense, and many of the other returning players could find themselves struggling to keep up with the influx of talent Martin has brought in.
