2009-2010 Indiana State Season Preview

It’s not often that teams come away from an 11-21 season feeling good.

But Indiana State did enough good things in the final month of last season to leave the Sycamores more uplifted than down in the dumps. They won six of their last eight games, and they did so fielding a lineup that will return almost intact this season.

It’s an even better one knowing that starters Harry Marshall, Rashad Reed, Aaron Carter and Carl Richard are back. Jordan Printy, who shared a starting spot with Carter, also returns. The one starter who does not – Jay Tunnell – leaves a huge hole. The Sycamores figure to match up well with any team in the league in the backcourt but will need to find someone who can score in the paint to take the pressure off the perimeter.

Senior Josh Crawford and junior Brant Leitnaker have the size but combined to average only 5.8 points and 4.1 rebounds in limited action last season. Injuries and inconsistency kept Isiah Martin from building on a solid freshman season in 2007-08.

The 6-5 Richard can help up front if he can develop more of an offensive approach. He finished 10th in the league in rebounding and was third on the team with 14 blocked shots. Redshirts Dwayne Lathan and Koang Doluony also should compete for playing time. Lathan, a transfer from Louisiana Tech, started a dozen games as a freshman and finished third on the team in scoring (8.2) and second in rebounding (3.9).

The Sycamores also could receive a boost if Iowa transfer Jake Kelly can play. The 6-6 Kelly averaged 11.6 points last season for the Hawkeyes and is appealing to the NCAA to forego having to sit out one season because the transfer was made because of family reasons. His mother passed away in a plane crash in the summer of 2008.
