2009-2010 Evansville Season Preview
Evansville finished last season with a winning record for the first time since 2000. Don’t expect the Purple Aces to make it two in a row.
No team in the Valley lost as much. Seniors Shy Ely, Nate Garner and Jason Holsinger combined to average 41.3 of the Purple Aces’ 67.1 points. Ely led the Valley in scoring and Holsinger finished his career as one of the top 3-point shooters in league history.
Evansville took another hit when guard Kaylon Williams transferred. Williams led the Valley with an average of 4.9 assists as a freshman and was a solid defender.
That leaves coach Marty Simmons to find four new starters. Pieter van Tongeren returns in the middle, but he’s isn’t exactly an offensive threat (4.8 ppg) and the rest of the returners were role players a year ago.
Kavon Lacey did start early last season, but an offseason knee injury has him on the mend. James Haarsma averaged 5.8 points and 4.2 rebounds a game as a freshman and the Purple Aces are hoping 6-10 transfer Bryan Bouchie can provide a big assist.
Bouchie redshirted last season after transferring from Valparaiso, where he played in all 36 games as a freshman in 2007-08 and averaged 7.0 points and 3.3 rebounds.
The Purple Aces will rely on several other newcomers to step up and contribute early and often.
This season could be a replay of 2005-06, when Ely and Holsinger were inserted into the starting lineup as freshmen. They took their lumps but developed into quality players.
