2009-2010 Tulsa Season Preview

Even though the Golden Hurricane haven’t played in the NCAA Tournament since 2003, athletics director Bubba Cunningham gave coach Doug Wojcik a 6 year extension following the 2008-09 campaign as a reward for his taking the team to the C-USA title game and the NIT.

More than that, it was recognition that Wojcik has put the Hurricane in position for big things in the coming seasons, including a serious conference championship run in Conference USA.

With four starters and six of the top seven scorers from last year returning, Tulsa has big plans.

Much of that hope surrounds the dynamic duo of center Jerome Jordan and guard Ben Uzoh, seniors poised to make imprints beyond their own neighborhoods. Some thought Jordan could have played his way into the NBA Draft’s first round had he decided to leave, but he’s back to provide the Hurricane with one of the more imposing interior forces in the country.

Uzoh has the potential to score 20 per game and completes one of the nation’s most impressive inside-out tandems.

Tulsa Backcourt

Tulsa’s season could depend on freshman point guard Donte Medder’s ability to run things efficiently. Tulsa had a whopping 117 more turnovers than assists a year ago and, although Uzoh showed an ability to deal the ball, he is more of a scorer. So Medder – a true point who can also put the ball in the
bucket – arrives with the chance to make a huge difference on a team with some big aspirations.

One thing is for certain: After playing in the CBI and NIT tourneys the past two season, the Golden Hurricane is looking for a March destination with four letters.

Uzho has the ability to shoot, defend and rebound. If Medder proves capable of running the team, Uzoh’s shooting accuracy should improve, since he won’t be burdened with the responsibility of setting everyone up. He’ll get support from 6-4 junior Justin Hurtt, who thrived down the stretch by hitting double figures in 13 of the final 18 games. Hurtt should be the team’s top 3-point shooter and also has the ability to get to the basket.

Tulsa’s backcourt depth took a hit during the spring when junior guard Glenn Andrews tore his ACL playing pickup basketball. He’ll be out until at least December, if not the entire season.

Tulsa Frontcourt

Jordan continued his offensive growth last year, carrying over the success he enjoyed during the last portion of the ’07-08 campaign. His challenge now is to be more productive with his game and improve his rebounding. Jordan’s blocks fell considerably last year, so perhaps his major reason for returning was to become a more consistent big man. If he does, look out. Since consistent Ray Reese is gone, Tulsa needs senior Bishop Wheatley to be more productive, particularly on the boards. Wheatley is a reliable part of the puzzle and has good size. Steve Idler, a 6-10 sophomore, has the chance to emerge, too. He played well last year and brings more beef to the lineup.

Newcomer Bryson Pope is an athletic swingman who can create his own shot, rebound and defend. Don’t look for him behind the 3-point line, though. The most intriguing newcomer is 6-10, 210-pound Kodi Maduka, who has a 7-3 wingspan, excellent athletic ability and a need to gain strength. Maduka will likely be brought along slowly, but he has potential.

2009-2010 Tulsa Predictions

Tulsa has big expectations and the team to reach them. If Jordan and Uzoh deliver as expected and Medder is able to provide a steady hand on the till, the Golden Hurricane will head back to the NCAA Tourney. Yes, there are some depth concerns particularly if Andrews’ knee keeps him out all year – but Tulsa has too much to falter.
