2009-2010 Southern Methodist Season Preview
Matt Doherty is Tweeting. He’s holding his son’s 12th birthday party in the Mustangs’ spanking new Crum Center. He’s selling the bright future. He just isn’t winning.
Last year’s 9-21 campaign included just three C-USA wins, an 0-12 road record and an RPI ranking of 265. Everybody knew Doherty needed time at SMU, but there appears to be little traction, if indeed there is any.
This season – Doherty’s fourth in Dallas – must feature at least a flirtation with .500, or the coach’s optimism will seem even less rational than it does now.
If the Mustangs climb, it will be primarily through the efforts of jet-quick sophomore Paul McCoy, the second-best freshman in the league last year. McCoy shoots, defends, dishes and creates excitement. A few more like him, and the Mustangs will be cooking. He’s teamed with senior Derek Williams, who had a strong debut after two JC years. Expect the tandem to combine for 30 points per game.
There isn’t much behind them, though, and that’s why Doherty brought in JC scorer Rodney Clinkscales late. He’s a tough guy and a shooter. Mike Walker shoots well, but fellow junior Ryan Harp can’t play major minutes.
Doherty should fret about his backcourt depth, but he needs to worry more about SMU’s interior toughness. That’s why he brought in JC big man Myles Luttman, who goes 6-11, 230 pounds. Don’t expect him to score much, but he will defend and hit the boards. He’ll join junior Papa Dia and sophomore Robert Nyakundi inside, although none of them will light up the scoreboard. Senior Mouhammad Faye has all-around skills, but needs to make better decisions, and redshirt freshman Cort Hoge goes 6-10, 245, but is still raw.
SMU is crawling toward prosperity, but there may actually be times this year when it rises and takes a few steps – before falling back down again.
