2009-2010 UConn Season Preview
Most programs would be in peril if they lost the two-time national Defensive Player of the Year and eventual No.2 overall NBA Draft pick, as well as the team’s leading scorer the past two seasons and a career 1,000-point, 1,000-rebound man.
At UConn, the losses of Hasheem Thabeet, AJ. Price and Jeff Adrien – not to mention steady defensive guard Craig Austrie – are greeted with a tinge of worry that quickly gives way to plenty of optimism toward what could be an intriguing season.
Questions abound and a leadership vacuum must be filled. But there’s enough talent here for Jim Calhoun & Co. to make a second straight run to the Final Four. Of course, there also are looming NCAA issues yet to be resolved in regards to the recruitment of Nate Miles. Until the NCAA weighs in, the potential for sanctions is a storyline UConn won’t be able to avoid.

UConn Backcourt
While Price etched his name as one of the program’s all-time greats and was a secondround NBA Draft selection by the Indiana Pacers, his void may be the easiest to fill. Sophomore Kemba Walker, a Big East AllRookie selection, seems poised for stardom. Lightning-fast, a deft passer and born leader, Walker is the consummate point guard.
Jerome Dyson, who has averaged at least 12.5 points per game in each of his three seasons in Storrs, returns as the shooting guard. Dyson was averaging 13.2 points when he tore the meniscus in his right knee on Feb. 11 against Syracuse and was lost for the season.
Little-used junior Donnell Beverly figures to be Walker’s back-up, with competition from freshman Darius Smith, a combo guard. Jamaal Trice, another freshman, is a versatile 6-5 combo known for his defense.
UConn Frontcourt
There is perhaps no more intriguing player in college basketball than Stanley Robinson, the 6-9 senior small forward. After sitting out the first semester last season for personal reasons, Robinson took a while to get back in the flow. Once he did, his boundless athleticism and improved shooting made him a true force. ‘Sticks’ averaged 17 points and 9.3 rebounds in six postseason games and may be the most NBA-ready of this year’s Huskies.
Gavin Edwards, a skilled, athletic 6-9 senior, has yet to start a game in his UConn career. The starting power forward spot is his to lose come November, though he could be pushed by a pair of freshmen – 6-9, 245-pound McDonald’s All-America Alex Oriakhi, and Ater Majok, a 6-10 Sudanese native with a 7-2 wingspan.
The tradition of 7-0 shot-blocking centers via Africa could continue with junior Charles Okwandu, a raw, inexperienced Nigerian who sat out the final two months of last season for academic reasons. Okwandu has shown vast improvement in practices, at least on the defensive end, and could be Calhoun’s latest successful big man project.
Jamal Coombs-McDaniel, Oriakhi’s high school running mate the past three years, could see significant minutes behind Robinson. Senior Jonathan Mandeldove gives the Huskies another 7 -footer in the middle.
2009-2010 UConn Predictions
Can Robinson show more consistency? Will Dyson fully rebound from his injury? Can Okwandu/Edwards/Oriakhi make up for the loss of Thabeet defensively? Who emerges as the vocal leader now that Adrien and Price are gone?
All fair questions, but all very answerable. And if they are, a trip to Indianapolis is hardly out of the question. The talent is there. UConn Finish in the Big East: 4th
