2009-2010 Seton Hall Season Preview
Coach Bobby Gonzalez is convinced that if the six new faces on Seton Hall’s roster this year had arrived en masse as freshmen, they would easily be a Top 25 recruiting class.
One problem: Only one is a true freshman. Three are transfers from other major programs that are now eligible; one comes from the junior college ranks and one is a promising center who was not eligible to play last year.
They get added to four returning starters in what could be one of the more interesting coaching challenges Gonzalez – or any coach, for that matter – has ever faced.
Transfers Keon Lawrence (Missouri) and Herb Pope (New Mexico State) weren’t just bit players at their former schools. They were budding stars who wanted to return closer to their East Coast homes. Only Jeff Robinson, who comes via Memphis, left seeking a better situation and more playing time.
So how will the new faces blend with the old ones, most of whom have dearly defined roles already? Tune in next March.

Seton Hall Backcourt
Of the 608 shots attempted from 3-point range by the Pirates last year, trigger-happy Jeremy Hazell took nearly half (290). How will the high-scoring wing react to shooting and scoring less?
Hazell finished second in the Big East in scoring last year at 22.7 points per game but wasn’t an efficient scorer. Gonzalez believes the supporting talent will make him that – and a better overall player.
Backcourt talent is plentiful. Lawrence, who averaged 11 points his final season at Missouri, appears to be an ideal fit in the Pirates’ fast-paced offense. And JC transfer Jamel Jackson was brought in specifically to add another 3-point shooting threat.
Point guard is in good hands and could be in great ones if senior Eugene Harvey plays to his capabilities. He has seemed disinterested at times during his career, though the supporting talent he now has may bring the best out of him. Sophomore Jordan Theodore, the future starter at the position, will back up Harvey again.
Seton Hall Frontcourt
All center John Garcia wanted this season was healthy knees and some help for a change. The fifth-year senior managed to get one of the two. Garcia – often Seton Hall’s only low post presence – will still be limited by his chronic knee problems, but he can rest more now because of frontcourt depth and talent surrounding him.
Start with Pope, the former McDonald’s High School All-American. He is penciled in to start at power forward, which means undersized-but-productive Robert Mitchell can slide from there to his more natural small forward. Mitchell averaged 14.6 points and 8.0 rebounds despite pounding inside with a wiry frame last year.
Robinson, a reserve on the Memphis team that reached the national title game in 2007, has breathtaking athleticism and will find time on the wing.
The big unknown – literally – is 6-11, 340-pound center Melvyn Oliver, who sat our as a freshman last year because of academics.
Gonzalez has raved about Oliver’s skill set, but his weight and stamina are issues. There were reports that he topped 400 pounds last year before slimming down.
2009-2010 Seton Hall Predictions
Gonzalez seems genuinely excited about this team. He is also refreshingly honest about whether he can make all of the pieces fit. Ego-wise? No one knows the answer to that one yet.
