2009-2010 DePaul Season Preview

After becoming the first Big East team in 15 years to fail to win a regular-season league game, the Blue Demons’ losses didn’t stop when the season closed.

Dar Tucker, the league’s No.5 scorer, declined his final two years of eligibility in an ill-fated bid to be selected in the NBA Draft. Coach jerry Wainwright had to release three loyal assistants, including his son, Scott, who followed him from Richmond four years ago. Yet those painful offseason maneuvers ought to benefit DePaul in the long run.

Tucker’s undisciplined style led to many empty possessions for a team that couldn’t afford any. Wainwright’s new staff features ex-Kentucky and Illinois assistant Tracy Webster, as well as former DePaul great David Booth, a native of talent-rich Peoria. Throw in Billy Garrett, who had a high profile the run at Providence St. Mel High School in Chicago, and the Demons are turning the spigot on local recruiting pipelines.

DePaul Backcourt

As DePaul’s season creaked to a crawl last winter, senior shooting guard Will Walker cranked it up with a 19.8 scoring average and 43 3-pointers over his last 12 games. He lit up West Virginia and Providence for 31 points apiece and Marquette for 30.

If Walker, who tried the point as a freshman, can handle more responsibility with the ball, then the Demons can give more time to the bigger wing players Wainwright prizes.

Ohio State transfer Eric Wallace, who maximized his year off by battling Tucker tooth­and-nail in practice, brings Tucker-esque athleticism to the small forward spot with the desire to defend and rebound. Junior college transfer Mike Stovall, a Chicago product who started his career at Oregon State, has excellent size and versatility.

When the Demons want to go with ‘true’ point guards, sophomores Jeremiah Kelly and Mike Bizoukas are back after last year’s harsh internship against many of the nation’s finest guards.

Junior Mario Srula gives the Demons a zone­buster, while tireless freshman forward Tony Freeland joins Wallace on the glass to rescue the league’s second-worst rebounding team.

DePaul Frontcourt

Mac Koshwal tested the NBA waters during the spring, but returned despite solid reviews from his handful of official workouts. He’ll need to be an NBA-worthy performer to deal with all the attention he’ll get. If the Demons’ perimeter shooters can rake some heat off Koshwal- and he improves last year’s .575 free-throw percentage – then it’s not crazy to expect him to average 18 points and 12 rebounds.

That’s where sophomore centers Krys Faber and Kene Obi must step forward. They’re developmental projects who need to grow into solid role players. Slender sophomore Devin Hill is a Euro-style 4 man who’s most effective in wide-open games when he can step our to hit jumpers and use his wingspan to block shots and deflect passes.

2009-2010 DePaul Predictions

With only two players (Koshwal and Walker) who’ve proven they can produce in the Big East, the Demons need several question marks to straighten into exclamation points if they’re going to sniff the Big East Conference’s upper half.
