2009-2010 Nebraska Season Preview
Things are literally looking up at Nebraska. For starters, the Huskers no longer will be the smallest team in college basketball. Nebraska’s roster has seven players who stand 6-8 or taller, including 6-11 Christopher Niemann and Brian Diaz.
In spite of the physical mismatches it faced last season, Nebraska managed to go 18-13 in Sadler’s third season, finish 8-8 in the Big 12 and earn a second straight trip to the National Invitation Tournament.
The Huskers did it with grit and hustle. They limited opponents to 60.4 points per game, ranking first in the Big 12 and 22nd nationally in scoring defense.

Nebraska Backcourt
Bringing in taller players will impact Nebraska’s backcourt personnel because the Huskers no longer will have to use players out of position.
Nebraska returns one backcourt starter in 6-4 senior Sek Henry, last season’s third leading scorer. Toney McCray and Brandon Richardson each saw more than 15 minutes per game of action last season and will contend for starting Spots.
Getting bigger up front should allow 6-4 Ryan Anderson to spend most of his time on the perimeter, where he is most effective. Anderson made the Big 12 All-Defense team last season and enters his senior year on Nebraska’s career charts for 3-point baskets and 3-point percentage.
He is Nebraska’s leading active scorer with 774 points, while Henry has 623.
Nebraska gets Eshaunte Jones back from ankle surgery that sidelined him after four games. A prolific high school scorer, Jones has the shooting range that could open things up inside for the Huskers.
He will contend with newcomers Myles Holley, Ray Gallegos, Mike Fox and Lance Jeter for playing time.
Nebraska Frontcourt
Chris Balham started 23 games last season but the 6-8 forward often played only a couple of minutes before Sadler would go to a smaller lineup. Balham finished the season averaging 10.1 minutes, the lowest of any Husker who played in 20 games or more.
Balham no longer is a Gulliver-like figure among the Huskers as Niemann, Diaz, 6-9 Brandon Ubel and 6-8 Quincy HankinsÂCole have joined the program.
Diaz, who played for Puerto Rico’s under-19 national team, joined the program in January after finally clearing up university admittance issues. He considered playing right away, but opted to redshirt in order to have four seasons of eligibility.
The NCAA forced Niemann to sit out last season because of eligibility issues. He tore his ACL in practice but is expected to be ready by September.
Junior college transfer Hankins-Cole and Ubel, a freshman, give Sadler additional options up front. He could have another if 6-8 Christian Standhardinger is cleared to play by the NCAA. Standhardinger comes from the same German school as Niemann and reportedly faces some of the same eligibility issues.
2009-2010 Nebraska Predictions
Nebraska has improved its league record in each of Sadler’s first three seasons, going from 6-10 to 7-9 to 8-8. That improvement is tied to Sadler’s ability to get the most out of his players.
In order to continue moving forward, the Huskers must improve offensively – they ranked 10th in the league in shooting and 11th in scoring last season. Nebraska did play a deliberate style in an attempt to level the court against bigger, deeper opponents, but the loss of four of the team’s top six scorers will require the development of other options.
Is Nebraska getting closer to having the kind of talent that will allow it to compete with the conference’s elite teams? That’s uncertain, but at least the Huskers won’t be overmatched physically night in and night out.
Nebraska Finish in the Big 12: 10th
