2009-2010 Kansas Season Preview
Any way you do the math, it’s difficult to not add up everything that Kansas has going for it this season and not come up with 1.
As in No. 1. The Jayhawks return five starters from a Sweet 16 team that went 27-8. All the key reserves are back, too. The Jayhawks are bringing in a highly regarded recruiting class and a big-man transfer from Arizona.

Kansas Backcourt
In Sherron Collins, Kansas might have the best point guard in the country. He’s aggressive on both ends of the floor and Self gave him plenty of freedom to operate last season.
Collins, like center Cole Aldrich, considered turning pro but decided to return. Collins needs to improve his assists-toturnovers ratio – a low 1.5-to-1 for a player of his caliber – and, as always, pay attention to his conditioning, But his big-time scoring ability, along with Aldrich in the paint, makes for a lethal outside-inside combination.
One of the Jayhawks’ priorities is to get more from their supporting cast to take some of the pressure off Collins and Aldrich. Collins put up 521 shots last season, the seventh-highest total by a Kansas player and the most by a guard since 1972.
Sophomore Tyshawn Taylor could be on the brink of developing into a solid No.3 option, given his summer play with the U.S. Under-19 team that won a world championship.
Taylor made steady improvement throughout last season but looked shaky at rimes in the NCAA Tournament. If he refines his scoring and playmaking abilities, he is capable of making a giant stride in his second season.
Brady Morningstar, who starred 34 of 35 games last season, and top reserves Tyrel Reed, Mario Little and Travis Releford are solid players capable of spectacular moments. Highly regarded recruits Xavier Henry, C.J. Henry and Elijah Johnson should press for playing time, with Xavier Henry capable of making a huge and immediate impact.
Kansas Frontcourt
Aldrich’s decision to come back to KU makes him the top returning big man in the league, and one of the best in the country.
Aldrich, a role player on the Jayhawks’ 2008 national championship team, emerged as a versatile scoring and rebounding threat last season. Aldrich also is a shot-altering beast inside and the league’s co-Defensive Player of the Year.
Brothers Marcus and Markieff Morris combined to average 12.0 points and 9.1 rebounds a game, while Little is capable of helping out up front. They’ll need to improve with 6-8 Thomas Robinson, an athletic power forward, joining the program.
Kansas also adds 6-10 freshman center Jeff Withey, who will be eligible at the semester break after transferring from Arizona. Withey and Robinson give Self options he didn’t have last season.
2009-2010 Kansas Predictions
Kansas’ storied basketball tradition doesn’t include any players who won two national titles during their stays in Lawrence. Collins, Aldrich and three other holdovers from the 2008 team have a chance to pull off that first.
