2009-2010 Kansas State Season Preview

Kansas State’s preseason prospects appeared bleak last fall following the loss of Michael Beasley and Bill Walker to the NBA.

The Wildcats had enjoyed their quick ride back into the national mindset, but were picked eighth in the Big 12 coaches’ poll. Other observers had Kansas State pegged to finish even lower. The Wildcats responded by going 22-12, tied for fourth in the league, and came close to securing a repeat trip to the NCAA Tournament. At it was, Kansas State played two rounds into the National Invitation Tournament.

This season, the forecasts will be much rosier for Kansas State. The Wildcats return four starters, including leading scorer Denis Clemente. A highly regarded transfer, Curtis Kelly, is eligible, and the recruiting class won raves.

Kansas State Backcourt

Clemente, a transfer from Miami, emerged as an impact player last season. The 6-1 guard finished the season 11th in the Big 12 in scoring – fifth in conference games only – and dished out 112 assists. His quickness on the perimeter posed headaches for opposing teams, as did his ability to knock down shots from beyond the arc.

Underrated Jacob Pullen teamed with Clemente to give the Wildcats a dangerous backcourt combo. Pullen averaged 2.2 3-point baskets per game, although Martin would like to see both him and Clemente improve their accuracy from beyond the arc, Pullen shot 33.5 percent, Clemente 36.6. Pullen, who scored 20 or more points eight times last season, also is a plus on the defensive end. His 54 steals last season ranked fifth in the league and his 94 after his first two seasons place him tied for sixth in school history.

Reserves Chris Merriewether and Justin Werner also return, and freshmen Nick Russell, Rodney McGruder and Martavious Irving also should figure into the mix for playing time. Russell might be the most talented, equally dangerous in transition or in the half court,

Kansas State Frontcourt

The Wildcats return starters in center Luis Colon and forward Dominique Sutton, and a top backup in Jamar Samuels, but a couple of newcomers will create a lot of buzz up front.

Wally Judge, a Top-20 recruit, and Connecticut transfer Curtis Kelly should help Kansas State’s big men take some of the scoring pressure off the perimeter. The Wildcats were tenacious on the offensive glass but missed too many point-blank shots.

At 6-9, Judge brings size and speed to the lineup.

Kelly also should help Judge’s transition. A highly regarded prospect coming out of high school, the 6-8 Kelly was a backup at Connecticut. He had the luxury of learning Kansas State’s system last season while sitting our after transferring.

Sutton and Samuels are athletic forwards who stand out more on defense than offense. Colon is dependable but hardly spectacular in the middle.

2009-2010 Kansas State Predictions

Last season was supposed to be a transition season for the Wildcats, but Martin got his players to buy in, play hard and produce. It was a team that lost its first four conference games and still wound up being in the hunt for an NCAA Tournament berth.

This season’s talented newcomers could help Kansas State rise above some of the inconsistencies that kept the Wildcats from reaching their highest goals last season. Kansas State Finish in the Big 12: 6th
