2009-2010 Iowa Season Preview

The process of reversing Iowa’s fortunes has been a slow, steady grind for Todd Lickliter.

But just when he felt like he was beginning to make progress with the Hawkeyes, Lickliter is forced to deal with a basketball cupboard that isn’t as stocked as it once was.

The Hawkeyes, who dealt with one setback after another in last year’s 15-17 campaign, must figure out how to move forward without their two leading scorers – Jake Kelly and Jeff Peterson – prominently performers who left to seek better personal situations.

Iowa Backcourt

Replacing Kelly and Peterson – who chose to leave for Indiana State and Arkansas – won’t be easy. Kelly, who left: to be closer to home, was Iowa’s lone link to stability, providing the Hawkeyes the big-game clutch performer that seemed to be otherwise missing. Peterson, who quickly gave Iowa a solid second scorer, wasn’t happy with the Hawkeyes’ style of play, choosing to head to a more up-tempo system.

But given what the Hawkeyes got last season from Matt Gatens and Devan Bawinkel, perhaps losing the former two standout scorers along with reserve Jermain Davis – who transferred to Minnesota State – won’t be as troublesome as originally believed.

Garens started every game at guard and matured into the kind of dependable shooter who will soften the blow of losing Kelly and Peterson. Garens returns as Iowa’s top scorer while Bawinkel, who made significant strides during his firsr season in Iowa City, will have to add to his production numbers.

Bawinkel will move into more of a leadership role as one of Iowa’s few seniors and should contribute to Iowa’s stable of 3-point shooters, who combined to shoot 36.4 percent last season.

Freshman Cully Payne may get the chance to move into the starting point guard slot left: empty by Kelly’s departure. Payne shot 49 percent as a high school senior, but won’t be truly valuable until he proves he can transition to college ball.

Iowa Frontcourt

Jarryd Cole quickly adjusted to being the point man when it came to Iowa’s post game last season.

Cole was asked to assume more responsibility as senior Cyrus Tare fought injuries for much of the second half of the season, changing the look of the Hawkeyes’ frontcourt.

Cole adds the title of captain while anchoring Iowa’s low post game until 6-9 freshman Brennan Cougill finds his niche in Iowa’s system, Cole’s ability as an effective mid-range post player gives the Hawkeyes versatility along with the strength needed to compete inside against the Big Ten’s premier post players.

Cole will be looked upon to score more while balancing out Iowa’s inside-out game along with Cougill, who brings the size and ability to score around the basket.

Forwards Andrew Brommer and Aaron Fuller – both of whom earned quality time as freshmen – will also be asked to contribute as Lickliter attempts to put all of the pieces together to keep the Hawkeyes on track.

2009-2010 Iowa Predictions

Until Lickliter finely tunes his chemistry with a new-name lineup, the Hawkeyes will remain in wait-and-see mode.

The challenge, however, is that there wasn’t a lot of turnover in the Big Ten, where the Hawkeyes appear to be this year’s Indiana­esque roster heading into the new season. Lickliter, though, won’t use that as an excuse. Iowa Finish in the Big Ten: 11th
