2009-2010 Dayton Season Preview
While it will be difficult to top last season. Dayton certainly looks even better now.
Anything less than an Atlantic 10 title will be considered a disappointment, and only a deep run into the NCAA Tournament would truly satisfy the expectations for the Flyers and coach Brian Gregory.
Four starters and 11 of the top 12 scorers are back from the 27-8 team that reached the NCAA Tournament second round a season ago. If nothing else, Gregory expects improvement to come from the entire team simply being a year older and wiser.
Then again, it’s not unheard of for teams to fold like cheap lawn furniture when the weight of expectations becomes too onerous.
Chris Wright is the center of attention for Dayton, a 6-8 forward with a 39-inch vertical leap. He logged a school-record 54 dunks last season, demonstrating full recovery from a broken ankle that forced him to miss much of the previous season. He’s a spectacular talent but isn’t the team’s only threat.

Dayton Backcourt
Senior Marcus Johnson provides Dayton with legitimate star power in the backcourt, earning A-10 honorable mention a year ago when he led the team in minutes and double-figure scoring games.
Johnson – second in scoring and tied with Wright for second in steals – expects to improve his numbers, as does senior point guard London Warren, who led Dayton in steals and was voted to the A-10 AllDefensive team as a junior.
In addition to Johnson and Warren, there’s Rob Lowery, Warren’s backup at point guard last season who was recovering from season-ending surgery in February to repair a torn patellar tendon in his right knee. He averaged 18.2 minutes, mainly off the bench, and was fourth in scoring and second in assists behind Warren.
Fifth-year senior Mickey Perry is the other experienced guard
Dayton Frontcourt
The irrepressible Wright could have filled a highlight reel last season. He led Dayton in scoring (13.3), rebounding (6.6), free throws made (121), dunks (54), double-doubles (six) and Sports Center Top 10 plays (three).
A fourth returning starter is forward/center Kurt Huelsman. The 6-10 senior was second only to Wright a year ago in blocks (44-22).
A pair of sophomore forwards – 6-6 Chris Johnson and 6-9 Luke Fabrizius, who was rehabbing a stress fracture – are likely to play key roles in the frontcourt, as is 6-10 junior forward/center Devin Searcy. Johnson averaged 6.3 points and 5.2 rebounds as a freshman, while Fabrizius, a big man with a 3-point shooting touch, led Dayton from behind the arc (.375) and was second in 3-pointets made (39).
2009-2010 Dayton Predictions
Will it be more of the same or will the pressure mount?
Wright & Co. hope to continue their two-year roll that produced seasons of 27 and 23 victories. Despite all their success, the Flyers settled for a three-way tie for second in the A-l0 last season with Rhode Island and Temple, but managed to match leaguechampion Xavier’s overall mark (27-8).
Xavier is down this year and breaking in a new coach but will still be good enough to make the Flyers work for any success they get. All the accolades and expectations won’t be validated until the Musketeers are dethroned. Dayton Finish in the A-10: 1st
