When it comes to NCAA football betting and NFL betting, the main key is always to understand the motivation. If one team is playing for a playoff spot and the other one has already clinched, clearly both teams will put forth a different type of effort.
In the NFL preseason, motivation is one of the most preeminent factors in betting. Aside from the rotations and depth, motivation is truly the key in the preseason. Some teams go all out while some teams don’t care whatsoever. In this matchup, we might have such a case.
Houston Texans @ Kansas City Chiefs
Arrowhead Stadium – Kansas City, MI
Saturday, August 15th
The Houston Texans and Kansas City Chiefs should have two very different mindsets going into their first preseason game on Saturday night.
For the Houston Texans, they have been a team that has been beaten up by injuries over the last few seasons. On top of that, they are dealing with a few players who happen to have a fairly weak reputation when it comes to injuries. For example, Matt Schaub has played in just 22 of a possible 32 regular season games in his two seasons with the Houston Texans. There’s no need for them to test out his durability in a meaningless preseason game.
Houston knows that they could be playoff bound and – maybe a factor on the Super Bowl odds –das long as they don’t suffer too many injuries. Look for them to just knock some rust off and pull their starters.
For the Kansas City Chiefs, their goals are going to be very different.
The Chiefs have a new general manager (Scott Pioli), a new head coach (Todd Haley) and a new franchise quarterback (Matt Cassel). Clearly, they are going to view this preseason game as more than just an exhibition.
Chiefs head coach Todd Haley has talked about his team being completely up for grabs. There are no starting spots on the team that are locked down, which means there is plenty of competition.
Not only with the Chiefs first string players be ready, the backups will also have to look sharp because they know what’s on the line. There are clearly openings to be had and the entire team should be in a competitive atmosphere.
Based on the two different motivations, it’s hard not to side with the Chiefs, especially at home.
NFL picks: Chiefs -2
