The 2011 regular season is only five weeks old, but New Orleans already looks ready to make a serious run at another Super Bowl title with four straight victories after a 42-34 opening-day loss to Green Bay as a 4.5-point road underdog. It is 3-2 against the spread and the total has gone ‘over’ in three of its five games.
Drew Brees once again has the Saints’ offense ranked near the top of the league in passing with an average of 336.6 yards a game. The big difference this season is a running game that is averaging 115.4 yards with the addition of rookie running back Mark Ingram and free-agent back Darren Sproles. These two have combined for 401 yards and three scores so far.
Tampa Bay’s three game winning streak came to an abrupt end this past Sunday in a 48-3 beatdown at the hands of San Francisco as a 2.5-point road underdog. The loss dropped it to 3-2 SU and 2-3 ATS. The total has gone ‘over’ in four of its first five games.
Last week’s loss pointed out some major deficiencies with the Buccaneers on both sides of the ball. The offense continues to struggle to put points on the board and it has fallen to 28th in the league with an average of just 17.4 points a game. The defense has also had a hard time keeping opponents out of the end zone. It is ranked 22nd in points allowed; giving up an average of 25 points a game.
The Saints are 2-6 ATS in their last eight road games and 4-10 ATS in their last 14 games against the NFC South. The total has stayed ‘under’ in 10 of their last 12 divisional games.
The Buccaneers are 6-2 ATS in their last eight games as underdogs and 4-1 ATS in their last five games against the NFC South. The total has stayed ‘under’ in nine of their last 12 games played in the division.
Head-to-head, the road team is 13-3 ATS in the last 16 meetings and the total has stayed ‘under’ in the last five meetings.
The odds makers have the New Orleans Saints as a -4 point favorite with an over/under of 49.5.
It will tough for Tampa Bay to keep this game close enough to cover as New Orleans already smells some blood in the water in the division race and will take advantage of the opportunity to extend its lead.
