Despite the fact it was playing Cleveland, Cincinnati’s 27-17 opening day victory as a 6.5-point road underdog came as bit of a surprise given the state of this team heading into the season. The total in this game went ‘over’ the 34.5-point line.
The Bengals decided to go with rookie quarterback Andy Dalton as their starter in place of the retired Carson Palmer, but it was journeyman Brad Gradkowski that helped seal this win after Dalton left the game with an injured wrist. Dalton remains questionable for this game, but Gradkowski could actually give the team a better chance to win this game.
Denver has some quarterback issues of its own after a less-than-stellar performance by Kyle Orton in its 23-20 loss to Oakland as a three-point home favorite this past Monday night. He finished the night completing 24-of-46 attempts for 304 yards and one touchdown, but a costly fumble, where he basically just dropped the ball, resulted in a Raiders’ score that ended up being the game winner.
The Broncos’ defense was one of the worst in the league last season, so first-year coach John Fox was hoping that this year’s revamped version would be able to turn things around. The results were mixed in the opener as Denver did hold the Raiders to just 99 yards passing, but had no answer for a rushing attack that torched it for 199 yards on the ground. It now faces Cedric Benson, who rushed for 121 yards against the Browns.
Cincinnati is 4-1 against the spread in its last five games as an underdog and 4-0 ATS in its last four games overall. The total has stayed ‘under’ in four of its last five games on the road. Denver is 2-5-1 ATS in its last eight home games and 3-9-1 ATS in its last 13 games overall. The total has gone ‘over’ its last nine games as a favorite.
The trends favor the underdog, which is 5-1 ATS in the last six meetings, but stick with Orton and Denver to get their act together at home to avoid a 0-2 start.
The odds makers have the Denver Broncos as a -3.5 point favorite with an over/under of 40.
