The Chicago White Sox came into this series with the division leading Detroit Tigers with a small chance to get back into the race but they are blowing it, especially after yesterday’s bullpen meltdown in the 9th. Whenever they are in a tough spot they seem to be able to count on starter Mark Buehrle , who while not the best, just might be the most consistent pitcher in the majors. Usually when the pitches the Sox win – 17-9 this season. Chicago enters Sunday with a .500 record and can not afford to drop below that for the rest of their season to remain meaningful. They are as desperate as they come right now and have an advantage on the mound Sunday so don’t count them out even though yesterday was a killer. FYI – Buehrle is 2-1 against Detroit this year but was hit hard in the lone start in Motown.
Detroit is doing a great job of creating more distance in the Al Central by taking the first two in their series with Chicago. It was no surprise when Justin Verlander dazzled in the opener on Friday night but yesterday’s come from behind victory was a real back breaker. To close things out they are relying on Mr. Unreliable Max Scherzer. Scherzer has electric stuff but is more AJ. Burnett than Verlander. He has lost his last two starts as well as his last two to the White Sox – although he didn’t pitch poorly in either. With two wins already this series is a positive for Detroit. I am not sure they are quite the team that goes for the jugular just yet though.
The odds makers have the Detroit Tigers as a -1.5 point favorite with an run total of 8.5.
Prediction: The White Sox should muster a little bit of heart and get out of Detroit with a lone victory, a little pride and a small chance to challenge down the stretch. Look for Buehrle to be his usual reliable self.
Score Prediction: Chicago White Sox – 6, Detroit Tigers – 2
