The Cardinals saw their four game winning streak come to an abrupt end, falling at San Diego 3-1 on Wednesday night.
Overall, St. Louis has won eight of ten and has quickly established themselves as the team to beat in the National League Central. It would be a good time to get hot as the Reds are cooling and the Brewers are heating up.
The Red Birds offensively haven’t been that spectacular with only two games in the last ten where they’ve plated more than four runs. However, the rotation has been solid and has kept them ahead in many of the games where the offense seemed to be lacking.
Still, St. Louis has outscored the opposition 33-21 in that stretch, and will meet an equal offensive adversary in Colorado this weekend.
So the Cards might need some runs when Jaime Garcia takes the mound on Saturday, but then again, they might not. The lefty is 5-0 with an ERA of 1.93 with 57 Ks and a WHIP of 1.03. He is 1-0 in one career start against Colorado and is coming off a 9-8, 10-inning win at Kansas City, where he gave up three runs and seven hits in five innings of work.
Meanwhile, the Rockies fell behind Arizona and didn’t have enough in the tank to catch up in a 6-3 defeat. Colorado couldn’t solve Micah Owings who allowed one run on four hits in five innings to pick up his first win in over a year as the Colorado offense continues to struggle.
Just as important was a disappointing outing from Clayton Mortensen who allowed four runs in six innings as he looks like a prominent figure in the rotation with Jorge De La Rosa out for the season with torn ligaments in his elbow.
With three straight defeats and losses in six of seven, the immediate concern is consistent production from their offense, which has scored more than three runs just twice in that span.
They will look to 24-year-old righty, Nicasio who will make his Major League debut on Saturday. Nicasio has a career 3.40/1.21 line with an 8.9 K/9 ratio in the minors. This year at Class AA, he’s posted a 2.22/1.02 line in 56.2 innings. Perhaps most impressive is that he’s walked just 10 while striking out 63. A high-90′s fastball and a power slider are the main ingredients in Nicasio’s repertoire.
The odds makers have the St. Louis Cardinals as a -1.5 point favorite with an run total of 8.5.

Matt’s Free Prediction: St. Louis – While Nicasio has shown some signs that he might be coming around, he’s had a sub-1.9 BB-rate in each of the past three minor league seasons. That said, a win against a very competitive and potentially explosive St. Louis line up, just doesn’t seem to be in the cards right now. I would take a look at the visitors in this one.
