The Kansas City Royals had some serious momentum following their first series win in the Bronx in over a decade but they couldn’t sustain it losing the opener of their following series against AL Central foe Detroit. In a rebound game like this one you would love to be able to turn to an ace on the mound but instead the Royals offer Rockie retread Jeff Francis who has been awful this season (0-4 record with an ERA north of 5). The best chance the Royals have is to hope a surprising offense (6th in the majors in runs) can jump all over opposing starter Brad Penny. Although I still don’t know whether the Royals are legit or not that is a proposition I can get behind, especially with underdog value on the Kansas City side.
The Detroit Tigers took the series opener continuing a recent hot streak that has brought them back into contention in the AL Central. They have now won 6 in a row and nine of their last ten. But this run of success was preceded by a 7 game losing streak making the Tigers the streakiest club in the Majors thus far this season. After a shaky start to the season starter Brad Penny has won three of his last four starts (proving me wrong a couple of times I hate to admit). All three were of the quality start variety too so he is giving his team a real chance to win lately. The Tigers are no slouch with the lumber either. They are just a hair behind the Royals in runs and feature the fearsome duo of Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez.
The odds makers have the Detroit Tigers as a -1.5 point favorite with an run total of 9.
