Not much was expected from Seattle this year but they are hanging in there so far in the American League West and are currently riding a 4 game winning streak, including last night’s series opener. Also exceeding expectations is today’s starter Doug Fister. Just 1-3 he has pitched well with an ERA of just over 3 while striking out 3 times as many as he walks. He is one of the tallest pitcher’s around at 6’8” so even though he isn’t the hardest thrower out there he can still be intimidating. He has never beaten the Red Sox in three starts but catches them at a good time as their offense is still not clicking the way most expected it would. Fister has given the Mariners a chance to win in everyone of his starts this season.
You keep thinking the light will come on the but the Red Sox continue to sputter. An offense that was supposed to be elite is only in the middle of the pack and the pitching has been even worse with only a couple members of the rotation giving the team consistent opportunities to win. John Lackey is not one of those two. Many thought this would be a bounce back season for the veteran but so far he has been down and up. Thankfully the up has been recent, his best start of the season was against his former team the Angels (8 shutout innings) last time out. The Mariners are also very familiar to him and he has a 13-9 record against them lifetime. Oddly Lackey has been better at home than on the road this season.
Prediction: Boston snaps the M’s winning streak behind a solid if not spectacular performance by Lackey. Seattle just can’t muster enough offense to win.
