The Tigers didn’t get off to a great start losing to the Yankees in the opener. Ace Justin Verlander was just OK and now they will turn to new Tiger Brad Penny to get the club into the winning column. The one good thing that came from the opener is that despite the negative attention swirling around him, Miguel Cabrera is swinging the bat well. He was just 1 for 2 but looks dialed in for another season among the hitting elite. It is hard to know what you are going to get from Penny who hasn’t pitched since May. He was very effective for St. Louis last year before going down with injury. He has spent the majority of career in the National League but his one stint in the AL was with Boston two seasons ago. His 5.61 ERA in the DH league plants the seed that it may not really be his thing and I am not sure we can give him the benefit of the doubt for now.
At this writing there is some concern about whether A.J. Burnett will make this start due to illness and no replacement has been put forth yet. Assuming that Burnett does go we will all be wondering which version we will see; last year’s implosion or the pitcher who justified a major investment in the years before that. Last year Burnett was out of sync almost all season and on a club that scored a lot of runs and won a lot of games we was just 10-15. Who is on the mound may not matter if the Yankees are able to rough up Tigers starter Brad Penny like I think they will. It was a good sign that Curtis Granderson got untracked with a homer and an even better one that Mark Teixeira, who is a notoriously slow starter went yard as well. Tex, one of the most consistent RBI guys in the league, could be in for a heck of a season.
The odds makers have the New York Yankees as a -1.5 point favorite with an run total of 9.5.

Prediction: Given the uncertainty around Burnett it is hard to recommend the Yankees in this spot. The O/U is 9.5 and I like these offensive teams to take advantage of the pitching matchup.
