Finally the season kicks off for the Boston Red Sox who are most pundits favourite to win the World Series this year after making some serious additions to their lineup in outfielder Carl Crawford and first baseman Adrian Gonzalez. Still I worry a bit about the days when neither Jon Lester or Clay Bucholz aren’t starting for the BoSox. That is not the case today as Lester takes the mound in the opener coming off the best season yet of a very good young career. Lester has had success against the Rangers in the past including a 1-0 record on the road against the Rangers so far with very good peripherals. Key has been keeping the Rangers table setter Ian Kinsler in check (just 2 for 16) limiting the opportunities for the Rangers big boppers to do some serious damage. Doing so again will be key to continuing his success and getting the Red Sox off to a good start.

The Texas Rangers are looking to finish what they started last year when they surprisingly made it all the way to the World Series before losing to the San Francisco Giants. They were hoping that Cliff Lee would be taking the hill for them this afternoon but they couldn’t resign the ace lefty. As a result they are turning to C.J. Wilson, a converted reliever who was fantastic for them last season. This lefty walks a few too many batters but he has proven that he can miss some bats too. This should a real pitchers duel as Wilson has historically been very sharp against the Red Sox. He has also had success against their new big bats, Crawford and Gonzalez, holding them to combined 2 for 13 lifetime. Both of these clubs have plenty of offense but we might not get a peek at that until the weekend.

The odds makers have the Boston Red Sox as a -1.5 point favorite with an run total of 8.5.

Prediction: With all that anticipation I like the Red Sox to rise to the challenge and win their opener on the road. Keep an eye on Dustin Pedroia who has had some success against Wilson in the past.
