2010-2011 Evansville Season Preview

Evansville was rewarded for staying the course last season. The Purple Aces knew they could be in for hard times, having lost their top four players from the 2008-09 team that posted a 17-14 record, the school’s first winning campaign in eight seasons. But no one expected things to go south as badly as they did, as Evansville lost its first 13 Missouri Valley Conference games. Instead of throwing in the towel, Marty Simmons’ players stayed true to his system and never quit working. The result: a 3-2 finish with victories over Wichita State and Northern Iowa down the stretch. That wasn’t enough to salvage the season, but it did provide Simmons and his players some momentum that they hope to build on heading into this season. Eight players return, including Colt Ryan and three other starters. Ryan was the obvious bright spot in Evansville’s 9-21 season. The 6-5 guard finished second in the Valley in scoring with a 14.5 average and was an overwhelming pick for the conference’s Freshman of the Year award. Ryan showcased an all-around game that should improve as he matures. He averaged three assists per game, shot 35.9 percent from beyond the arc and made it to the free-throw line 122 times. Denver Holmes made a big stride in developing into a solid second or third scoring option. He increased his scoring average from 2.2 points as a freshman to 10.7 as a sophomore, earning a spot on the league’s All-Improved Team. Point guard Kavon Lacey and center Clint Hopf also return, leaving Simmons needing only to find a replacement for forward James Haarsma. That’s a big hole to fill, considering Haarsma was Evansville’s lone consistent inside scoring threat as well as its best rebounder. Shoring up the inside is a prime task as the Purple Aces simply got overpowered too many times last season. In order to try to get tougher in the paint, Simmons is bringing in three players 6-6 or taller, including junior college transfers Kenny Harris, a 6-6 forward, and Matt Peeler, a 6-8 scorer who can help at either the center or forward spots.
