2010-2011 Richmond Season Preview
Every team, even one that goes to the Big Dance like RIchmond did last March, has its warts. In the case of Richmond, rebounding was its Achilles’ heel as the Spiders were minus-54 in rebounding margin last season. Their weakness in the paint was their undoing against Saint Mary’s (Calif.) in the first-round of the 2010 NCAA Tournament, a game in which they were out-rebounded, 40-18. The loss ended the Richmond careers of wings David Gonzalvez, the school’s NO.5 all-time scorer with 1,727 career points, and Ryan Butler, who sits in the top five all-time in Richmond history in steals and 3-pointers made. But with three starters returning from last year’s 26-9 team – including established stars in 6-foot point guard Kevin Anderson, who flirted with early entry before withdrawing his name from the 2010 NBA Draft, and 6-10 senior Justin Harper – the Spiders should remain near the top of the A-10 in 2010-11.

Richmond Backcourt
Finding someone to replace Gonzalvez won’t be easy, but at least Anderson, the reigning Atlantic 10 Player of the Year, will return for his senior season. The cat-quick Anderson can beat anyone in the country off the dribble. Once in the lane, he can score or dish out to open 3-point shooters. He enters his senior season with 1,552 career points, already the eighth highest total in school history. Gonzalvez hit numerous critical shots and was a tireless worker who bought into all of the team notions coach Chris Mooney preaches. Replacing him won’t be a one-man job, so 6-6 junior FrancisCedric Martel, 6-5 senior Kevin Smith, 6-5 sophomore Greg Robbins and 6-3 sophomore Darien Brothers will all be asked to take on bigger roles. Mooney also welcomes two gifted freshmen guards from perennial high school hoops powers in 6-foot point guard Cedrick Lindsay from Gonzaga (D.C.) College Prep and 6-3 shooting guard Wayne Sparrow from St. Frances (Md.) Academy.
Richmond Frontcourt
Anderson won’t be the only pro prospect in Richmond’s starting five. That’s because Harper made tremendous strides as a junior and figures to blossom into a Is-point per game scorer or better in 2010-11. Harper is a matchup nightmare because at his height he possesses rare deep range on his jumper. Harper will be rejoined in Richmond’s frontcourt by 6-9 Darrius Garrett and 6-9 Dan Geriot (already a 1,000-point scorer). Garrett and Geriot figure to be bigger pieces of the offensive puzzle, while burly 6-6 freshman Derrick Williams, who played his high school ball for the legendary Bob Hurley Sr., figures to be a factor right away. If Geriot’s knee gets markedly stronger in year two after ACL surgery – which is the case for most athletes – then Richmond should be much more stout on the backboards in 2010-11, a must as last March’s first-round flameout against Saint Mary’s proved.
2010-2011 Richmond Predictions
Anderson’s decision to pull his name out of the NBA Draft and return to Richmond and Mooney’s decision to withdraw from consideration for the Boston College opening were two huge offseason wins for the Spiders. With their coach on the floor (Anderson), as well as their smart, young head coach (Mooney) both back in the fold, the Spiders will battle Temple, Xavier and Saint Louis for the A-10′s top spot this winter and should hear their name called on Selection Sunday.
Richmond Finish in the A-10: 3rd
